Live or work in the Western Suburbs of Brisbane? Can you imagine a world where your ideas are realised? Sign up to the Social Innovators Program to get that extra something that makes the difference.

The Social Innovators Program is bringing together 18-25’s who are active in their communities.

If you are leading , creating, volunteering and/or influencing the world around you, this is a prime networking, learning and support opportunity. People with new ideas and those already forging ahead are welcome.

The program consists of five workshop days across five months.

In the Social Innovators Program, you will:

  • Exchange knowledge, experience and ideas with like-minded people
  • Develop your skills and knowledge as a community leader
  • Get connected to experienced social innovators
  • Find out about resources and other relevant opportunities
  • Get support for your ideas and community initiatives

Program Dates:

  • Day 1 – 21 November 2009
  • Day 2 – 22 November 2009
  • Day 3 – 5 December 2009
  • Day 4 – 6 February 2010
  • Day 5 – 20 March 2010

(Sessions will be held at venues in Toowong and Indooroopilly)

The Social Innovators Program is responsive to the interest and input of participants.

Ignorance 2 Impact – Creating Sustainable Futures

AIESEC UQ’s upcoming event, Ignorance 2 Impact – Creating Sustainable Futures, provides an environment for Brisbane’s top university students as well as concerned members of the Brisbane community to learn about and discuss the current state of environmental and social issues in Australia and around the world.
The seminar will be followed by a networking event for passionate delegates to meet and discuss with representatives from different companies after the seminar. There will be more than 15 companies attending the networking event, offering great opportunities to people to share their opinions directly with these corporates. Furthermore, opportunities to work overseas (voluntary positions) will be presented at the event.
We will have 5 speakers during the event:
Vice-Chancellor of UQ           Paul Greenfield
Geodynamics                          Dr Doone Wyborn
Oxfam                                    Ms. Angela Ballard
University of Queensland       Dr Andrew Griffiths
Carpets for Communities        Beata Majewska
Donations to the event will be given to Carpets for Communities (CFC) – a charity organization aiming to provide long term income to empower women in Cambodia to reduce the cycle of poverty.

Mental Health Week 2009

MHWlogoMental Health Week is an annual national event which aims to engage communities in activities which promote good mental health, and raise awareness and understanding of the needs, experiences and issues concerning people with a mental illness.

Mental Health Week in 2009 will commence on Sunday 4 October and run through to Saturday 10 October – which is also World Mental Health Day.

Mt Coot-tha is one of Brisbane’s unique and valued icons because of its location, resources, historical and cultural significance. Brisbane City Council is currently developing an integrated 20 year master plan to make sure Mt Coot-tha’s diverse uses, unique stories, spaces, destinations and experiences are enhanced and sustained for generations to come.

Photographic Competition Scene and Unseen

The Welfare Rights Centre is behind a photographic competition that is intended to raise awareness of poverty and social exclusion in Queensland. This competition will not only raise awareness amongst the general community but will give a wide range of people an opportunity to get involved in their community.

This competition is sponsored by the Electrical Trades Union – Qld Branch. The primary objective of Trade Unions has always been the maintenance and improvement of living standards for the member, their dependents, those unable to work and those who have retired from the workforce.

The main aims of Anti-Poverty Week are to:

  • Strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia;
  • Encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems, including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments.

Bling Bang Hiphopera

Join us! Get involved in a musical theatrical journey of sound and sight into the stories of youth in an urban hip hop environment. A dancing, rhyming, theatrical journey into urban hip hop culture…

So you think you can rhyme? Dance? Sing? Organise? Make sets? Costumes? Join in the making of a cross-cultural theatrical musical – a ‘Hiphopera’.

Drawn from the stories of war and peace, land and city, from the lives of immigrants and refugees, indigenous and non-indigenous, and from all levels of ability comes this heavy visual journey into hip hop culture. Bling Bang is supported by internationally renowned music and theatre directors & choreographers, to be performed at The Powerhouse, New Farm, in October 2009.

Brightest Young Minds Summit applications now open!

If you are selected as a BYM, it will unlock a world of opportunity for you. And after experiencing the summit, you will never be the same again. BYM is for young people between the ages of 18 and 28.

Being selected as one of Australia’s Brightest Young Minds depends on so much more than just IQ. We are looking for the future leaders of Australia: We generally look for people with Leadership, Passion, Creativity, Initiative, Intelligence and Perseverance. However, we are very open-minded and consider each application carefully, so feel free to argue for and justify your selection on any other bases you wish.
