The first ever Creative Professionals Unite Brisbane night is in the theme of Animation, Illustration, and Design and it’s going to be awesome!
We are kicking things off in line with National Youth Week with an interactive, content packed night with a talk from Academy Award winning Illustrator and Animator, Andy Monks. Even if you’re not an illustrator or designer, this event will be a lot of fun and a chance to hear from an amazing artist and meet your fellow creative friends.
Andy Monks is an Australian based freelance Illustrator who has worked for many major entertainment and animation houses internationally and locally including Animal Logic. Clients have included Disney, Warner Bros and Village Roadshow. He has also worked on advertising for Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and music clips for band’s like Silverchair. As well as numerous film projects including Inspector Gadget 2, George of the Jungle and Happy Feet.
Andy has won numerous awards for his work including an Academy Award for Happy Feet for Best Animated Film 2007 as well as numerous Art Director and Animation and Effects Awards.
I’m really excited to have Andy speaking. He will talk about his journey to becoming a successful animator and illustrator and what he did to get his career and creativity to such a high level. Andy is a really engaging speaker and warm personality and it will be great opportunity to ask him questions about the industry.
We will also be screening animations, and showing art works, I may even be able to secure a band. There will be fun interactive and creative activities to help you meet everyone.

If you’re looking for other young people who are out there shaping Queensland’s creative landscape, you can now search an online tool which profiles the next big things in creativity.
Young artists, artworkers, cultural producers, media makers and creative entrepreneurs from anywhere in Queensland now have the opportunity to be profiled online and find like-minded people in their local area.
YAQ’s Young People Creating Queensland project is helping young Queensland creatives build their profile by getting connected, gaining exposure and being recognised for the hard work they do in their local community.
The project includes a print publication and a website www.youngpeoplecreatingqld.org.au that serves as an artist directory.
Log on and find an artist near you! Simply search by art category or region.
If you are 30 years of age an under, you can join the project and add your profile online. Click on the ‘Submit a listing’ link and upload your text and images to the site.
Copies of the 2009 print directory are available from the YAQ office. Contact us on (07) 3252 5115 or email info(at)yaq.org.au to place your request.
Young People Creating Queensland is a YAQ project that has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through the Department of the Premier and Cabinet’s Q150 Community Funding Program and Arts Queensland.
The Perfect Gift for a Man

The Perfect Gift for a Man book smashes stigma and stereotypes of male role-models in our community. Through it’s honesty, integrity and raw emotion tells us all that’s it’s okay to ask for help when you need it.
In mid-2009, The Inspire Foundation launched the #Manweek campaign to raise awareness of some of the issues impacting young men to coincide with the refresh of www.reachout.com.
A number of Australian bloggers supported this campaign, sharing their thoughts, challenges and experiences with their readers. The group of guys involved saw a need to share their stories of manhood to explore what it means to be male and also encourage others to do the same.
Two young Brisbane guys, Edward Harran and Mark Lobo, donated their time and creative efforts to collaborate with other Aussie men to produce The Perfect Gift for a Man.
Each of these stories was a gift – sometimes painful to write, always astounding to read.
“They got under our skin, and as the campaign ended, we felt that the campaign had only just scratched the surface. We wanted to take these stories and share them with others – with our brothers, fathers and uncles.
With our friends and families. This book is the result.”
- The Perfect Gift for a Man team
All proceeds of the purchase of the book go to The Inspire Foundation, whose mission is to help millions of young people lead happier lives. You can also grab a free e-copy here. Over 3,000 copies have been downloaded so far.
About Edward Harran
Edward Harran is a digital curator and attention philanthropist from Brisbane, Australia. He is passionate in how social media can be used as a force for positive social change and connection. He likes playing guitar and has a tendency to make lame jokes.
About Mark Lobo
Mark Lobo was born in Hong Kong, raised in Japan and spent his high school and university years in Queensland. After a number of years climbing the corporate ladder, his part-time passion quickly evolved into his full-time business, Mark Lobo Photography.
Mark’s perfectly healthy obsession with inspiration and the idea of ‘six degrees of separation’ in Brisbane’s tightly knit creative community sets the foundation for his ongoing project entitled BNE. A dynamic, creative portraiture project with no set list of subjects and no set end date, BNE allows each of his subjects to choose their own inspirations to be photographed.

Young people that define Brisbane
“Years of dedication and devotion to her passion has seen this young lady evolve into an artist that has more than just a beautiful singing voice to offer. As the proud writer of her lyrics she shares the whole world of a young lady, battling to make her art her life.
Having her first piano lesson at the age of 7, there was no stopping her from there. Cat displays amazing power in her voice, and when you see her live, you’ll understand that the power bursting out of her lungs is influential because it comes from the heart.”
Cat Thompson is a young artist that you can see at Brisbane City Council’s 2 Loud in the Library. If you want to find out more about this event, check out the 2 Loud in the Library page.

Meet Jessica. In 2005, Jess enrolled at the Albert Park Flexi School, an inclusive learning community that supported her to do, well, whatever she dreamed of! Sure, there were no fairies or flying cars involved, but as Jess said “there’s just something special about APFS that makes you feel like you belong”.
And it was this “something special” that gave Jess the inspiration and determination to take up work experience at City Hall in 2006, then graduate at the end of the same year. But wait, there’s more! What really rocked out was Jess recently being offered employment by Council as an admin trainee.
We got a little glimpse into the world of the soon-to-be Council superstar…
Music? :: ‘Anything that isn’t country!’
Spare time? :: ‘Hanging out with friends’
Inspiration? :: ‘To see somebody from extraordinary circumstances that can transform and begin to love life when they should be hating it.’
New job? :: ‘Scared! APFS is flexible, but maybe work won’t be like that!’
You’re on a desert island, and the monkey who is the boss of the island asks you for some advice. The monkey’s got a short memory, so you only get one sentence :: ‘Even if you don’t think something’s possible, you can achieve it if you stick with it.’

The Traveling So and So’s

Young People that define Brisbane
Summon together the psychedelic blues and shamanic lyrical mysticism of The Doors, capture the ferocious party groove of The Cat Empire, incarcerate the 60’s pop vocal charm of Nancy Sinatra, and lock all the aforementioned in a traveling gypsy caravan, with a fresh supply of French wine and bohemian absinthe in tow. Nine months later you have their illegitimate love child product – The Traveling So and So’s.
The Traveling So and So’s were formed in the European summer of 2007 whilst its teenage members were backpacking through the continent’s most intriguing, enticing and sometimes truly weird countries. Bringing a touch of this boisterous bohemian spirit home to create chaos on stages from Brisbane to Sydney, The Traveling So & So’s endearing blend of gleeful pop tunes, sordid tales, 60’s soul numbers, and ferocious party grooves provoke a colourfully crafted and infectious live show, time and time again.
Having recently impressed audiences at a string of local Music Festivals and other small and high profile shows alike over the summer of 2008, 2009 is already set to be an exciting year for The Traveling So and So’s as they await a March release date of their much anticipated debut EP.
The So & So’s regularly gig throughout Brisbane, and you can catch them at this year’s 2 Loud in the Library…
