The Oaktree Foundation invites students to register for Race 4 Change, a scavenger style/amazing race event to be held on Saturday 2 October, 2010. The Race 4 Change takes place in and around the Brisbane City where teams of 4 have to solve clues, reach destinations and take part in challenges. Registration is $30 per person, and the money raised will benefit The Oaktree Foundation’s educational projects in PNG and South Africa to reduce global poverty. Its about having a day out exploring your city, where you can challenge yourself and make a change to other people’s lives.

Creative Sparks Applications now open!

Creative Sparks Grants, a joint initiative between Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, are now open for applications from Brisbane artists, arts and cultural workers and organisations.
This grant is available to support the development of arts and cultural projects, skills development, professional development, professional exchange, arts and business partnerships and the development of new creative concepts for Brisbane.
Category 1: Creative Projects that enrich Brisbane communities.
Category 1 Creative Sparks Funding support projects that implement creative projects in any art form within a community context that enriches the creative life of Brisbane. Projects will need to consider Brisbane’s identity, people, environment values, history and future, particularly for those areas of the city where access to cultural resources may be limited.
Category 2: Professional Development.
Category 2 Creative Sparks Funding support opportunities for artists and arts workers – projects that seek to advance the career prospects of artists and arts workers will be a priority. This may include concept development and presentation of creative concepts.
Category 3: Arts/Business Partnerships.
Category 3 Creative Sparks Funding encourages artists and arts organisations to develop ongoing partnerships with businesses. Support may be available for new forms of collaboration between artists, arts workers, businesses and communities.
Category 4: Creative Laneway Activation
Category 4 Creative Sparks Funding grants support the activation of lane-ways, alleyways and small spaces to deliver a new dimension to Brisbane’s hidden backstreets. Support is offered to artists and arts workers who propose temporary artwork and cultural outcomes which draw inspiration from or provide a creative interpretation for the current use and future opportunities of the lane-way. Identified lane ways for Category 4 proposals are; Edison Lane, Eagle Lane(‘t’ section only – link between Eagle and Queen Streets), Gresham Lane & Hutton Lane
There is a maximum of $20,000 is available for each Creative Spark Grant and the applications close on 11 October 2010. To make life easier and the explore the application process further, the Brisbane City Council will be running grant application ‘bootcamps’, where Council officers will provide their professional expertise and support to ensure that your application is as solid as possible. Seeds of Change Forum!

“The Earth Charter +10 festival “Seeds of Change” educational forum is a signature event of the Department of Education and Training’s “Year of Environmental Sustainability” for all Queensland Schools. The event will celebrate whole of community approaches to sustainability by showcasing the efforts of schools, educational institutions and community organisations from across the Australia Pacific region.
Workshops will include presentations from students, educators and representatives of community organisations, describing how the values of the Earth Charter have been transformed into action for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world.

Bay Wave Youth and Community Festival 2010

Bay Wave Youth and Community Festival celebrates and recognizes the importance and achievements of all young people in the local community. The purpose of the festival is to create opportunities for showcasing the talents, skills and ideas of local young people. The Festival offers a range of activities, workshops and performances throughout the day for the whole community to enjoy and participate in. Bay Wave Youth and Community Festival is organized and delivered by Youth and Community Program based at BABI Youth and Family Service (funded through Brisbane City Council and Department of Communities).
Bay Wave Youth and Community Festival each year includes performances by young people (12-25) in theatre, dance, and music, as well as a variety of markets, youth & community stalls and free or low cost activities. This youth festival is open to individual young artists, bands and youth services in Brisbane and Bayside that work creatively with young people to have the opportunity to showcase their work and promote themselves.
What: Festival for the community to celebrate our local young people and the community.
Live Bands, Hip Hop performers, workshops, stalls and activities, Skate and Bike Comps, food, FREE STUFF.

Brisbane Sounds Presents Blues & Roots Showcase

Brisbane Sounds is pleased to announce the first in a series of spin off events to showcase Brisbane’s diverse music artists. The first in this series will take place at the Zoo nightclub on Thursday 29 April and will offer a selection of Brisbane’s finest blues and roots artists featuring Asa Broomhall, Busby Marou and Transvaal Diamond Syndicate.
Brisbane Sounds was established in 2006 to shine a spotlight on the local music scene in order to increase the visibility of Brisbane as a music city. Brisbane Sounds produces an annual compilation CD featuring a diverse selection of Brisbane artists that is showcased at international music conferences.
Asa Broomhall is arguably Australia’s best kept blues and roots singer songwriter who combines powerhouse guitar and harmonica with thumping stomp box action.
Busby Marou are the most exciting indigenous Australian combo to come out of Queensland in recent years who produce beautifully crafted melodic tunes mixed with deadly guitar playing.
Transvaal Diamond Syndicate are a loud rocking duo who have built a reputation for their dirty blues rock sound and gritty live shows.

Amazing Race Carindale Sunday April 17th!

Just wanted to put word on the street about an event the young people of Carindale PCYC are hosting for National Youth Week.
Amazing Race Carindale is a team race around Carindale’s surrounding areas in competition with other teams. Contestants strive to collect imagery and souvenirs at various checkpoints across the terrain in a set time. Great prizes for the winning team. This event is for any young person who wants to meet some new people and enjoys the excitement of a challenge!

Battle City!

Presented by Brisbane City Council in association with Knee Deep. The ultimate hip hop block party invades Brisbane’s CBD.
Now in its tenth year, Battle City sees b-boys and b-girls in crews of four face off to a soundtrack of high energy hip hop and funk as all endeavour to take out the $400 cash prize.
Turning up the volume will be some of Australia’s best established and emerging artists including DJ Mathmatics, Rainman, B Girl Demilition, Yuinhuzami, Liones, MC Que, Minicru, B Boy Jester, B Boy Riot, 2 Days Apart, Calski DJ Bacon and more.
